Dahlonega was the site of the second discovery of gold in Georgia in 1828 (Villa Rica was first in 1826) and only the second major gold rush in the United States. The Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site stands in the middle of the town square, housed in the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse.
Dahlonega is home to the main campus of the University of North Georgia.
