1> Explore Downtown Dahlonega!

Of all the small towns in Northeast Georgia, the Dahlonega square is one of the most vibrant, tourist friendly areas! Although some new construction has taken place, many original buildings now host great restaurants and shops. Our favorite is the General Store. In the 1970s this building housed the Lodestone Restaurant and kept many of us North Georgia College students from starving! Today it is a great place to pick up some gifts and accessories and the owner is the son of the Lodestone operator.

2> Winery Tours!

Northeast Georgia's second gold rush is actually in the grape! There are several wonderful vineyards and wineries within minutes of downtown Dahlonega. Even better, several of these wineries have tasting rooms on the Dahlonega Square - what a deal! We have a suggested wine tour here: [Wine Tour].

One of our favorite places to enjoy lunch and great views is the Monteluce Vineyard and Winery. Please read our review here [Monteluce Review].

Gold Mining in and around Dahlonega Georgia

The gold rush, illegal mining and the poor treatment of the Cherokee Indians: Numerous gold mines were illegally developed in the area. White miners, entering illegally into the Cherokee Nation lands, came into conflict with the Cherokee, whose territory they had trespassed. The Cherokee Nation had their own gold mines which the United States Government tried to buy, but Principal Chief John Ross rejected their offer.

More.. Gold Mining in and around Dahlonega Georgia

Gold was mined by Cherokees and other Native Americans in the area before and after the Cherokee Removal of 1838-39. The Cherokee lands were defined by the treaty between the federal government and the Cherokee Nation in the Treaty of Washington (1819). The miners raised political pressure against the Cherokee because they wanted to get the gold. The federal government forced the Native Americans west of the Mississippi River to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears during Indian removal.
